The Soros Prosecutors

During the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election, massive political donations flowed into the presidential race. This is typical. When I was still in the running, for instance, I raised over $92 million from concerned citizens all over the country—the most money every raised in the history of Republican presidential primaries. That historic support came from more than 1.5 million contributions, averaging $59.90 each. The other candidates were likewise raising tens of millions. When we dropped out, however, leaving only Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, the money from major donors all went to those two campaigns.

Well, almost all of it.

Around that time, the ultrawealthy billionaire George Soros, born in Hungary and radicalized over a decades-long career in hedge funds, began funneling a large chunk of his massive fortune into smaller, less noteworthy races all over the United States. Suddenly, the well-known supporter of radical left-wing causes such as police “reform,” reparations, and court packing seemed more interested in local races for district attorney than he was in the most consequential presidential race of his lifetime. An article in Politico at the time referred to this effort, quite presciently, as “an under-the-radar 2016 campaign to advance one of the progressive movement’s core goals: reshaping the American justice system.”3

At the time, according to Politico, Soros had funneled more than $3 million into seven local district attorney campaigns that year, “a sum that [exceeded] the total spent on the 2016 presidential campaign by all but a handful of super-donors.”

It should come as no surprise that all of the candidates Soros supported in those races—none of whom would have had a prayer of getting elected without his massive campaign war chest backing them up—were some of the most far-left prosecutors that the United States had ever seen. These were people who had seen the work of men like John Chisholm in Milwaukee County, applauded, and then said, effectively, “You think that’s crazy? Hold my latte.”

For several months, operating under everyone’s radar—which, considering the Republican who was at the top of the ticket at the time, wasn’t all that hard to do—Soros and a small group of political foundations in his shady network funneled money into these races, seeing them as their best chance to corrupt the American justice system from the inside.

They were correct.

When it comes to the prosecution of criminals, there are few elected officials with more power than your district attorney. As soon as they’re elected, district attorneys have the power to decide what crimes to prosecute in your county and whom to prosecute; there’s an old adage that, if a DA asks it to, a grand jury will indict a ham sandwich. Electing radical DAs dramatically increases the chance that criminal prosecutions will be used as partisan weapons to target their political opponents.

But, perhaps even more importantly, DAs have enormous discretion about which cases not to prosecute. If a district attorney decides, for instance, that assault with a wrench should not be prosecuted in his county and sends a
